SUMMER SOUNDS: The Season Of Melodies

The streets of NYC buzz with music in the summertime. Here are some albums that I can never get enough of, and are sure to take you into the summer on the right musical note.

SOUL SEARCHING: City Retreats

Manhattan has been rightfully named the city that never sleeps, but there are still plenty of places to relax from the bustle of every day life. If you can’t get away on vacay, you can still take some time to enjoy small oases around the city. Here are a few of my favorite places to retreat from the chaos.

THE CLOISTERS
Located at the northern tip of Fort Tyron Park 212-923-3700

An extension of the Metropolitan Museum of Arts, John D. Rockefeller built The Cloisters in 1938, and any visitor will immediately be transported to a medieval world high above the Hudson.

THE LOTUS GARDEN
www.thelotusgarden.com
97th St. btwn. Broadway and West End Ave. 212-5804897; open to the public on Sundays only

If you love water lilies, head straight to this rooftop garden perched 20 feet above Broadway. Cherry and peach trees fill the air, and those who pay $15 for a key that allows lifetime entrance consider it a gift.

DIA CENTER ROOFTOP
www.diacenter.org
548 West 22nd St. 212-989-5566

Chelsea offers much more than just great shopping and nightlife. The rooftop at Dia Center for the Arts was designed by Dan Graham and consists of a large glass sculpture that causes 3-D reflections of the Manhattan skyline, a café, and park benches to retreat.

SIZZLING STEAK AND SOUNDS: STK
 www.stkhouse.com

UrbanDaddy - STKAuthentic steakhouses in New York City abound, but you’d be hard pressed to find one that combines a good T-bone with a lounge feel. This is where STK comes into the picture. The ever trendy Meatpacking District has added a new steakhouse to it’s long list of seen and be scene restaurants.  The décor includes modern black and white accents and rounded banquettes, complete with a live DJ on the weekends to complete the lounge atmosphere. Reservations are a must and even then you’re probably going to wait. I shared the medium-sized bone-in rib steak. It was charred to perfection and a great balance to their popular parmesan truffle fries.

SUN IS SHININ’: Toasting Outdoors

Summer is here! What better way to celebrate its arrival than by lifting your glass in an open air space? New Yorkers are known to frequent happy hour places all year long, but the summertime brings with it a renewed energy at local bars and restaurants. Here are three great places to enjoy a drink outside any day of the week.

79 Street Boat Basin CafeBOAT BASIN CAFÉ
W 79th St at Hudson River
(212) 496-5542

Stone steps lead down to a café with a backyard BBQ feel. The bonus that you won’t get in your backyard though is the amazing view of the Hudson River.

One Bryant ParkBRYANT PARK GRILL
25 W. 40th St. (bet 5th & 6th Ave)
212-840-6500

Planted in midtown’s peaceful Bryant Park, you even can enjoy rooftop dining with a glass of merlot in hand.

El Rey Del SolEL REY DEL SOL
232 W. 14th St nr. Eighth Ave.
212-229-0733

If you love margaritas in every flavor imaginable, then head straight here. Happy hour prices and an outdoor garden in the heart of the Meatpacking District are sure to set your summer off right.

The complex includes a Golf Club, Sports Center, Sky Rink, Bowling Alley, and Spa. With the summer’s arrival, you can also sun bathe on the roof deck with the New Jersey as your background.
