THE CONTINENT AT THE TIP OF YOUR TONGUE: MERKATO 55

Who would not want to taste 25 different small bites from an entire continent, especially a continent with so many different countries with exceptional and distinctly different foods? The Kodogo bar at newly opened Merkato 55 offers just this—in addition to a restaurant serving “Pan-African” cuisine, inspired by chef Marcus Samuelsson’s visit to various countries in Africa. These small plates, or “meze,” include everything from grilled piri shrimp to spiced tripe.

THAI TIME : Thai Market NYC
960 Amsterdam Ave between 107th and 108th St.
(212) 280-4575
www.thaimarketnyc.com

Wall décor displaying Bangkok street life easily complements the spacious atmosphere of Thai Market Restaurant on the Upper Westside. This is Thai food done the right way amongst a plethora of many, with typical elements like mint, chili, and lemongrass infused delicately balanced in many dishes. Appetizers are both inventive and varied, ranging from the Thai Market Crepe, which is a crispy rice crepe with minced shrimp and coconut-- to the hugely requested Daikon Cake, which is sautéed with soy sauce, bean sprouts, and egg. The tart minced salmon is flavored with chili, mint, lemongrass, and galanga, and served at room temperature with lettuce leaves for wrapping.

The Pad Thai entrée did not disappoint. The presence of tamarind and chili powder are subtlety delivered amongst slightly al dente noodles. For dessert, the green tea ice cream seemed to be very popular with diners at this obviously popular spot.

KRUPS-HEINEKEN BEERTENDER

When I hear about gadgets like this, it makes me miss college even more. These kids have it too good these days. The folks at Heineken have created a “kegerator,” for the keg lovin’ booze-drinking fiend in all of us. Available only at Williams Sonoma.
