EAT FOR THE ENVIRONMENT: PICNIC KIOSK
Battery Park near the Staten Island Ferry

Fall picnics are comfy and never face the issue of the overbearing heat of summertime. Battery Park welcomes this month two kiosks to complete your day out, brought to you by pastry chef of Room 4 Dessert Will Goldfarb. You can sample everything hear from a Tuna Caprese sandwich to portable desserts. Picnick is also eco-conscious--the servingware is biodegradable and some of the profits will go to the Battery Conservancy gardens surrounding New York Harbor, so eat up for a good cause.

COOKIE MONSTER: CITY BAKERY
3 W. 18th St.  (btwn. 5th Ave & Avenue Of The Americas)  (212) 366-1414

I am a not a huge dessert person. Believe it or not, I am even—brace yourself—allergic to chocolate. So when I do find a non cocoa-based dessert that strikes my palate-I love it, quite obsessively. Perfect example? The oatmeal raisin cookie at City Bakery. The desserts at this spot are no secret to many New Yorkers, especially the acclaimed chocolate chunk cookie, which I must stay far away from while those in line eating it moan in ecstasy. The oatmeal raisin version is amazing in its own right. This is not your hit or miss kind of cookie, where some spots are moist, others are crumbly, and the intense rush of butter and all that other sweet goodness you crave is nowhere to be found. This cookie is granules of sugar bursting in your mouth, mixed with a subtly sweet raisin. This is a carbalicious cookie that finds the perfect balance between crunchy and soft and answers you with each bite, saying “Yes! I am just this delicious!”

INTERNATIONAL VIEWS: 3 GREAT READ

A Thousand Splendid Suns

This is one of those novels that kept my imagination reeling for weeks after I had finished the last page. International best-seller Khaled Hosseini follows up the Kite Runner with A Thousand Splendid Suns—and does not disappoint. Like its predecessor, there is the villain, there is the victimized, and the overarching theme of self-sacrifice. You will understand Afghan history in a way that you may have never imagined, and become entrenched in the lives of each character as they seek some sort of normalcy in the war-torn country. What grabbed me the most in this novel was the relationship between Laila and Tariq. Besides Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God, I cannot recall a love story more enormous, a friendship that can withstand the most unimaginable.

Stolen Lives: Twenty Years in a Desert Jail

Malika Oikfir and her family spent more than 20 years in prison under the Moroccan government. After her father’s failed attempt to overthrow King Hasan II, Malika and her family are stripped from their life of affluence with the royal family and sent to prison. Stolen Lives is the account of Malika and her five siblings and mother’s survival in the most horrendous experiences—a true testament to a family’s unbreakable bond.

A Long Way Gone: Memoirs Of A Boy Soldier

A Long Way Gone tells the riveting story of Sierra Leone’s civil war, through the eyes of a former child soldier.  Beah’s charming personally is juxtaposed with the horrific reality of civil war throughout the novel. This is a gripping memoir that in many ways reads like a novel, with each page becoming more entrancing and unbelievable as we see Beah’s plight unfold.

HALLOWEEN FOR GROWN FOLKS: CITY CELEBRATION

Halloween is huge in New York City. Adults easily outdo the children when it comes to dressing up and partaking in as many festivities as possible. If you are not in costume, especially on the subway, you are very likely to stand out. Here are some events to check out:

Village Halloween Costume Ball: The annual parade in the village showcases some of the most creative costumes you’ll ever see. Parade is Wednesday, October 31st, starting at 7pm on 6th Ave. from Spring St.

Nightmare: Face Your Fears. This popular maze of winding rooms and hiding ghouls almost gave my friend a heart attack last year. When I am having a bad day at work, I often replay her screaming on the floor with tears streaming down her face as a mute ghost jumped out of a wall. Sort of cruel, I know. Guess you had to be there…Sep. 28-Nov 3.CSV Cultural Center, 107 Suffolk St. 212-868-4444

CSI Lovers: you’ll want to know about this. There’s still time to play in the city before it gets too cold. This is one of those ultra cool things in the city you read about when it’s over and curse yourself for not knowing about. Accomplice New York, a scavenger hunt of sorts, leads you to meet characters around the city who feed you clues like “He’s in a wine cellar in Little Italy,” while you spend an entire afternoon trying to figure out a detailed criminal plan. Tourists—no fear, you will be provided with all the materials necessary to navigate around the city, while discovering many spots you may not have otherwise gotten to see, including historical monuments, restaurants, and unknown shops. Many people who have participated call it the most brilliant way to see New York.

SPRING BRINGS BEAUTIFUL THINGS: FASHION WEEK 2008

Spring 2008 Fashion Week brought to the city more than just a slough of celebrities from Los Angeles to take in the festivities under the tents in Bryant Park—it also brought the feeling of an exotic island vacation, with just the water and the colors of the sky between you. The reemergence of bold, exaggerated ethnic prints, as seen in the headbands at the Diane von Furstenberg show, and the loose silhouette pieces of Oscar de la Renta reiterated the jet setting feel of the week. Many of the looks were sloppily chic, especially at the Anna Sui show—but also included the lusciously retro yet ultra-feminine styles of Derek Lam (tying with Catherine Malandrino as my absolute favorite show).
Here were a few of my favorite pieces:

Diane von Furstenberg

COMFY YET CHIC: FALL FLATS

According to a recent Reuters article, the average American woman owns 19 pairs of shoes. My mother always told me I was above average. The article also states that 43% of women have at least been moderately injured by shoes—which is why I love flats so much. In New York, it’s all about the heels at night (the more inches, the more admired), but I believe a woman can never have enough flats as well, especially in such a get up and go kind of city. Fortunately, Fall is all about my heel-less friends. Here are a few you are sure to see shuffling around the city.
